Lev Yashin (1929-1990) is a legendary Soviet football player, a goalkeeper, the USSR Honoured Mater of Sports earned the Olympic champion and European champion titles in 1956 and 1960 respectively, the five-fold champion of the USSR. Lev Yashin is considered the best goalkeeper of the twentieth century according to the rating of the IFFHS (International Federation of Football History & Statistics), the World Soccer, France Football and Placar publications. Yashin is the only goalkeeper ever who received the Golden Ball Award (in 1963). He was awarded with FIFA Order of Merit in 1988. Lev Yashin played for Dynamo sports club.
In 1963, Lev Yashin capped for the rest of the world team in the match dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of the English football. Yashin is known all over the world under various by-names, his ever black goalie clothing, his agility and tumbling stunts earned him the nickname the Black panther, his astonishing goalkeeping ability earned him the nicknames the Black spider or the Black octopus. He had his farewell match on 27 May 1971 in the presence of 103,000 spectators. The monument was opened on 2 May 1997. The monument authored by Alexander Rukavishnikov.
