The universal sports hall "Druzhba" (the famous "shell") was built in 1979 for the XXII Summer Olympic Games in 1980. Competitions in tennis, volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, sport dancing, and mini-football were held there.

In 2016, a decision was made to reconstruct the three-story “Druzhba” building, which by that time was in disrepair. The Palazzetto dello Sport arena in Rome became as an example for the architects. The technical assignment and the concept of the facility were developed on the basis of the regulations of the All-Russian Volleyball Federation, the Mini-Football Association of Russia, the Russian Basketball Federation and other sports federations. Work at “Druzhba” began in January 2018 and is scheduled to be completed in the 4th quarter of 2020.

USH "Druzhba" is located at embankment of the Moscow river, not far from the Vorobyovy Gory metro station.

The project involves replacement and renewal of all utilities, the installation of modern security systems, ventilation, and air conditioning. Work has already been carried out on the glazing of facades, the installation of roof cladding material, the application of a fire retardant to the internal supporting metal structures, the arrangement of external ventilation ducts, the arrangement of external engineering networks. Facades and entrance groups are being reconstructed, heating systems are being installed. The builders have strengthened the floors, replaced the supporting structures of stands. Recognisable exterior of the building will remain the same. But the "filling" will be different. New building of “Druzhba” will house the Central hall with an area of about 2,000 sq.m, three multifunctional halls, gym, medical rehabilitation facilities, conference hall, press centre, cafe, methodological, administrative, and other premises. It will be possible to host sport events, concerts, and exhibitions, which will be able to host over 3,000 people. It is assumed that “Druzhba” will host competitions in eight sports: tennis, volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, acrobatic rock and roll, sport dancing and mini-football.

The best sports and commentary equipment from leading international suppliers and companies will be installed at “Druzhba”. There are automated telescopic stands with the possibility of extending from 1 to 9 rows for holding events with different requirements, as well as parting stands into 3 parts to accommodate a basketball court. The capacity of the Central hall will be up to 3,100 people. Modern and comfortable chairs will be installed here for spectators. The building is also adapted for people with limited mobility.

Due to the presence of numerous entrance groups and zoning of the facility, the streams of people attending events in different halls and premises will not intersect.
